As the push to live a sustainable lifestyle is pushed further and further into the public eye, event planners are beginning to rethink the way that they throw a party. In today’s eco-conscious society, many people hate to see excess even if it is for a party. Party planners have begun to find ways to make recycled materials into pretty part decorations and to buy carbon offsets for their events. This year’s Emmy Awards were even billed the “Green Emmys.”

Can Baking Soda Save the Planet?

A company called Skyonic announced the invention of a new system which uses carbon dioxide emitted from smokestacks to make baking soda. The company has already begun a pilot version of the system at an electric station in Texas. While there is still plenty more to make the system viable on a large scale, it offers an interesting solution to problems involving sequestering carbon.

According to the U.N. developed nations must immediately take action to fight global warming or the world will see an onslaught of catastrophic natural disasters. Poor nations with underdeveloped infrastructure and limited funds will be hit hardest as they are least able to respond to the impending natural disasters. According to Olav Kjorven, head of the U.N. Development Program’s bureau for development policy, global warming will cause 600 million more people in sub-Saharan Africa to go hungry from collapsing agriculture. The U.N. panel says that the greatest financial responsibility lies with the U.S. and other rich nations.

Instead of buying your hand soap in individual containers, just buy the economy size and refill your existing containers. A regular 7.5 oz of liquid hand soap costs $1.99 whereas the 64 oz refill costs $7.49. In order to get the same amount of hand soap from the 7.5 oz containers you would have to spend $16.98, which is more than double what you are paying. Yes, we know it is easier to buy the individual containers, but buying a refill not only consumes far less packaging, it saves you quite a bit of money.

Gas Guzzling Giants Made Over as Hybrids

A company in Kansas is turning gas guzzling vehicles into fuel efficient hybrids. Neil Young, rock legend, recently brought his beloved 1959 Lincoln Continental in to have its motor replaced. After the new motor is installed, Young expects to get 100 mpg in his old car. In addition to reforming old classic cars the company, H-Line Conversions, has also turned Hummers, Cadillac Escalades, and Jeeps into fuel efficient hybrids.

The Electronics Take Back Coalition announced a new campaign to help push for television manufacturers to make it easier for consumers to recycle their televisions. According to the group, only 12.5 percent of e-waste is recycled. Electronics often contain lead and other hazardous materials and if not disposed of properly can cause severe damage to the environment.
