The Clinton Global Initiative took place in Hong Kong.  Amidst social resonsibility taking the back burner during the current financial crisis, business leaders in environmental consciousness spoke.  The main message throughout the summit: being green must prove profitable…and turning a profit must be green.

OPEC leaders met in Cairo on Saturday to determine a market quota. While demand has been down, the organization made no decision to limit output. Leaders think a consensus for supply quotas may be made in December.

Leaders in natural gas from Russia, Iran and Qatar formed an alliance similar to OPEC. While gas prices sell for about half what they did at their high, natural gas producers ramp up. But the agreements won’t prove quite as effective since natural gas is used in only small pockets of the global market.

Kuwait Petroleum Corporation denies any allegations of discussion to store oil reserves abroad in China, Vietnam, or other parts of the Asia. The corporation is accused of considering stockpiling due to international tensions that may break out. But as crude prices decline, the idea of stockpiling dramatically falls.

EDF (Electricite de France) buys out British Energy which has a plant and 1,400 jobs in Scotland. EDF claims it plans to keep the plant open, but Scottish policy against nuclear energy feeds fears of the plant closure. This is the third FTSE 1000 company bought out with plants in Scotland.

GM announced that in order to make its goal of having the all electric Chevy Volt on the market by 2010, it may need to produce the batteries outside of the U.S. At the same time the company asked congress for $25 billion dollar in loans to support the development of advanced technology vehicles.
